Alien Covenant on Land and Air...
In Alien Covenant, the crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, takes an ill fated detour to what they think is an uncharted potential colony site. In reality this works out to be a very very bad move. In the 'air' the Covenant was mainly provided by Framestore, (along with some chest splitting alien effects). On the ground MPC provided a large amount of the visual effects nightmare in Ridley Scott's latest Alien film. Covenant picks up the story about ten years after Prometheus, and things have not gone well for Elizabeth Shaw, thanks in large measure to David's rather dark private god complex.

Canon launches the EOS C700
On Thursday, November 3, Canon filled the ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood with Society members, cinematographers and other production professionals for the unveiling of their new flagship digital cinema camera, the EOS C700. November 3 is a significant day for Canon, noted Elliot Peck, the company’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Imaging Technology and Communications Group, Chairmain and CEO of Information and Technology Services. It was exactly five years ago, in 2011, that Canon first unveiled their EOS C300 and pledged a commitment to the cinematography community to collaborate, listen and evolve new technology designed for filmmaking.
Anisotropic Elastoplasticity for Cloth, Knit and Hair Frictional Contact
Physically based animation of elastic surfaces and curves has been an essential aspect of computer graphics for nearly three decades. Whether it be di erent layers of clothing in a virtual garment, in- dividual strands in a head of hair or even yarns in a knit garment, collision and contact phenomena of these materials are essential for the richness and realism provided by physics based simulation. Unfortunately the thin nature of these materials makes collision detection and resolution challenging. This process is often the bottleneck in modern visual effects. Building on recent methods that characterize frictional contact in granular materials via elastoplasticity, we present a new approach for codimensional elasticity that uses a hybrid Lagrangian/Eulerian Material Point Method (MPM) discretization to model frictional contact with a continuum view.
Neil Blomkamp opens Vancouver Studio
It’s been an eventful two years since Neill Blomkamp’s last film, Chappie, hit theaters. He spent part of that time working to develop a fifth installment of the Alien franchise, only to have it overtaken by Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant. At the same time, he directed an installment of BMW’s The Hire series, starring Clive Owen, and signed on to help write and direct an adaptation of Thomas Sweterlitsch’s upcoming novel The Gone World.
