About the film

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring THE MARTIAN home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

“In the history of the movies, there may be no robot more alluring, more eerily fascinating to look at, than Ava, the star and subject of EX MACHINA.”

Ty Burr, The Boston Globe

“Ava has enough allure and cunning to become a classic noir robot vixen – an apocalyptic, silicon femme fatale.”

Maureen Dowd, The New York Times

“One reason for the success of EX MACHINA is that Ava is such a remarkable and compelling creation. Her look is an edgy combination of human and machine.”

Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), an A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined. Written and directed by Alex Garland.

By 1938, Universal Studios was certain that the public appetite for horror films had faded and they abandoned the genre. That same year, a nationwide re-issue of DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN on a double bill played to packed theatres across the nation and quickly brought them to their senses. Instead of a low-budget cheapie to cash in on the re-born craze for horror films, SON OF FRANKENSTEIN under the direction of Rowland V. Lee, proved to be a handsomely-produced entry in the cycle.

Filmed on the most expressionistic sets of any horror film since THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, George Robinson's gorgeous black-and-white cinematography captures every shadow, every out-sized distortion beautifully.

SON OF FRANKENSTEIN is also blessed with perhaps the greatest horror film cast ever. Karloff gives his farewell performance as the creature and Bela Lugosi’s portrayal of Ygor is creepy, roguish, even pitiable, and one is reminded of what a fine actor he could have been with a role worthy of his talent. Presiding over all of this is the solid presence of Basil Rathbone as Baron Wolf von Frankenstein. Watch for scene-stealer Lionel Atwill, who delivers his definitive screen role as the one-arm Inspector Krogh.

This first-rate production gave a whole new meaning to the Baron’s famous shout out: "It’s alive!"

VES members receive discounted tickets for films presented by the Alex Film Society at Glendale's Alex Theatre. Their programs include classic feature films, cartoons, newsreels and short subjects together with guest appearances by notable personalities. Thier mission is to entertain and educate the audience while demonstrating to film owners that there is a market for classic films and the financial risks involved in film preservation are worthwhile.

Thier goal is to present the best possible prints so patrons can enjoy films in the manner for which they were intended. At the same time the Alex Film Society must pay the expenses associated with our programs and strengthen our ability to maintain and upgrade the film capabilities of the Alex.

General admission is $16 / $12 seniors (65+) and students (full time with ID) and $11 Alex Film Society members. (Some special events are higher, please see schedule page. Alex Facility Fee is included; additional box office fees may apply)

Synopsis: THE WALK - Twelve people have walked on the moon. Only one has ever, or will ever, walk in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers.

Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), guided by his real-life mentor, Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), is aided by an unlikely band of international recruits, who overcome long odds, betrayals, dissension and countless close calls to conceive and execute their mad plan. Robert Zemeckis, the master director of such marvels as FORREST GUMP, CAST AWAY, BACK TO THE FUTURE, POLAR EXPRESS and FLIGHT, again uses cutting edge technology in the service of an emotional, character-driven story. With innovative photorealistic techniques and IMAX® 3D wizardry, The Walk is genuine big-screen cinema, a chance for moviegoers to viscerally experience the feeling of reaching the clouds.

It is also one of the rare live-action films that is a PG-rated, all-audience entertainment for moviegoers 8 to 80 – and a triumphant true story to boot. It is unlike anything audiences have seen before, a love letter to Paris and New York City in the 1970s, but most of all, to the towers of the World Trade Center.

Hollywood's Next Gen Content Strategy

Rarely have Hollywood stakeholders been so united in their enthusiasm for a new technology. In development for several years, High Dynamic Range (HDR) content will deliver brighter, more colorful, and more exciting experiences for audiences. HDR adds a “WOW” factor to content that consumer’s notice immediately.
What’s Hollywood’s game plan for HDR? How will it be promoted and used for this year’s biggest blockbusters? What are the creative decisions that need to be made when producing HDR content? What do you and your team need to know about using and maximizing HDRs power?

To get the latest information and answers to these and other key questions please join us on September 30, 2015 for The Advanced Imaging Society’s HDR Workshop at Paramount Pictures Studios.

This seminar is open to colorists, producers, directors, and creative teams interested in the latest industry information and in gaining HDR expertise.

In this timely thriller, charismatic and ruthless businessman Rick Carver (Academy Award® nominee Michael Shannon) is making a killing by repossessing homes - gaming the real estate market, Wall Street banks and the US government. When he evicts Dennis Nash (Golden Globe nominee Andrew Garfield), a single father trying to care for his mother (Academy Award® nominee Laura Dern) and young son (newcomer Noah Lomax), Nash becomes so desperate to provide for his family that he goes to work for Carver – the very man who evicted him in the first place.

Carver promises Nash a way to regain his home and earn security for his family, but slyly seduces him into a lifestyle of wealth and glamour. It is a deal-with-the-devil that comes with an increasingly high cost - on Carver's orders, Nash must evict families from their homes. As Nash falls deeper into Carver's web, he finds his situation grows more brutal and dangerous than he ever imagined.

99 HOMES is directed by Ramin Bahrani, produced by Ashok Amritraj, Ramin Bahrani, Justin Nappi and Kevin Turen. The screenplay was written by Ramin Bahrani and Amir Naderi, from a story by Ramin Bahrani and Bahareh Azimi.  Cinematography by Bobby Bukowski, Edited by Ramin Bahrani, Production Design by Alex DiGerlando, Original Score by Anthony Partos and Matteo Zingales, Costume Design by Meghan Kasperlik, Make-Up and Hairstyling by Remi Savva and Amy Wood, Sound Mixing by Micah Bloomberg and Mark A. This session covers the practical information, engineering and science needed to understand and use the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES), which is becoming the standard for color management, image interchange and archiving for motion pictures and television. Developed by the motion picture creative and technology communities, under the auspices of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, ACES provides true match clips so CG artists can see what the filmmakers meant for them to see, furnishes common color transforms and metadata so that supervising VFX teams and DI colorists can better integrate footage from multiple facilities, helps maintain the creative integrity of VFX images downstream, expands the creative palette with high dynamic range and wide color gamut capabilities, arms small shops with the ability to punch above their weight and opens the door to running multiple shows on one pipeline.

Gain a deeper understanding of what ACES means for VFX. Hear tips about how to get your facility up to speed. Learn how VFX artists use ACES on recent, high profile projects. And, understand from colorists how ACES helps protect VFX artistry.

Speakers will include VES member and four-time Academy Award winner for Scientific and Engineering Achievement and President and founder of RFX Inc. Ray Feeney, Sony Pictures Entertainment's Michael Whipple, Senior Compositor and Color Pipeline Specialist on THE LEGO MOVIE and THE GREAT GATSBY Alex Fry and Skylab Technical Director from CHAPPIE and ELYSIUM Chris Davies with moderation by VES member, CTO and Creative Partner at Felix & Paul Studios and former CTO of Weta Digital Sebastian Sylwan.

After years of research and development, the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) 1.0 has arrived! It is becoming the standard for color management and image interchange for motion pictures, television, commercials and other forms of professional content. This session will deliver an overview of the engineering and science as well as practical information needed to understand and implement ACES into postproduction and VFX pipelines.

ACES enables DPs and directors to better preserve their creative intent from on-set monitoring and look management, to dailies, editorial, VFX, the DI and on into archiving. It does this by addressing the long-standing color management issues facing today’s productions. ACES expands the creative palette with its high dynamic range and wide color gamut capabilities, while streamlining collaboration with standardized encodings and file formats.

Alex Forsythe, Academy technical lead on the ACES project, is traveling to New York to speak about the development of, and latest innovations in, ACES and how it helps color management and workflows. His presentation will be followed by a discussion about practical, real-world implications with several key members of the New York post production and VFX community.

Hear how ACES is being implemented with today’s tools on-set and at leading facilities in VFX, post and mastering. Seating is limited so please RSVP to seminars@postnewyork.org to reserve your place.
