This session covers the practical information, engineering and science needed to understand and use the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES), which is becoming the standard for color management, image interchange and archiving for motion pictures and television. Developed by the motion picture creative and technology communities, under the auspices of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, ACES provides true match clips so CG artists can see what the filmmakers meant for them to see, furnishes common color transforms and metadata so that supervising VFX teams and DI colorists can better integrate footage from multiple facilities, helps maintain the creative integrity of VFX images downstream, expands the creative palette with high dynamic range and wide color gamut capabilities, arms small shops with the ability to punch above their weight and opens the door to running multiple shows on one pipeline.

Gain a deeper understanding of what ACES means for VFX. Hear tips about how to get your facility up to speed. Learn how VFX artists use ACES on recent, high profile projects. And, understand from colorists how ACES helps protect VFX artistry.

Speakers will include VES member and four-time Academy Award winner for Scientific and Engineering Achievement and President and founder of RFX Inc. Ray Feeney, Sony Pictures Entertainment's Michael Whipple, Senior Compositor and Color Pipeline Specialist on THE LEGO MOVIE and THE GREAT GATSBY Alex Fry and Skylab Technical Director from CHAPPIE and ELYSIUM Chris Davies with moderation by VES member, CTO and Creative Partner at Felix & Paul Studios and former CTO of Weta Digital Sebastian Sylwan.

After years of research and development, the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) 1.0 has arrived! It is becoming the standard for color management and image interchange for motion pictures, television, commercials and other forms of professional content. This session will deliver an overview of the engineering and science as well as practical information needed to understand and implement ACES into postproduction and VFX pipelines.

ACES enables DPs and directors to better preserve their creative intent from on-set monitoring and look management, to dailies, editorial, VFX, the DI and on into archiving. It does this by addressing the long-standing color management issues facing today’s productions. ACES expands the creative palette with its high dynamic range and wide color gamut capabilities, while streamlining collaboration with standardized encodings and file formats.

Alex Forsythe, Academy technical lead on the ACES project, is traveling to New York to speak about the development of, and latest innovations in, ACES and how it helps color management and workflows. His presentation will be followed by a discussion about practical, real-world implications with several key members of the New York post production and VFX community.

Hear how ACES is being implemented with today’s tools on-set and at leading facilities in VFX, post and mastering. Seating is limited so please RSVP to seminars@postnewyork.org to reserve your place.

VES Los Angeles Section Kickoff Event at Zoic Studios

Zoic Studios opened its doors and sponsored the first VES LA Section event:  a mixer in the “Cool Things” Series.  Each event in the series features a studio or visual effects facility hosting wine & beer with nibbles and showing “something cool.”

Zoic showcased some of their Mobile Virtual Production apps, streamlined integration with Shotgun, and pipeline related tools and techniques that they have built to meet the aggressive demands of production.  Their priority on research and constant creative growth has led Zoic to distinguish themselves as one of the leaders in technology and visual effects.

Members and non-members alike came out, had a drink, met the new LA Section Managers, mingled with friends and saw something COOL!

Visual Effects Master: An Evening with Joe Letteri and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Five-time Academy Award winner Joe Letteri will give an exclusive behind-the-scenes presentation of his work on the Oscar-nominated Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Letteri is one of the world’s leading visual effects artists. The emotional richness and complexity of the apes in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is just the latest achievement, along with his stunning work on The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, in a truly remarkable career that earned him his Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects on Avatar, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and King Kong. He also received a special Technical Achievement Award from the Academy for the subsurface scattering technique that brought Gollum to life. In this very special program, Letteri will present work on Dawn and other films, including content created exclusively for this event that will provide an inside look at the work of Weta Digital, the New Zealand company that was founded by Peter Jackson and is widely considered to be the premier visual effects studio. This one-hour presentation will be followed by a screening of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 3-D (Dir. Matt Reeves. 2014, 130 mins. Dolby Digital 3-D. With Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Andy Serkis.)

Tickets: $20 ($12 members at Film Lover, Dual, and Family levels / free for Silver Screen members and above). Order tickets online.
