Environment

If someone is moving to your area, are there any unusual weather conditions that they should prepare for? Does there tend to be a lot of snow, rain, are there hurricanes, etc?

  • -10 degrees celcius in winter with some snow, and 40 degrees celcius in summer. It's a land of total extremes. Mostly dry, but very hot and humid with thunderstorms in summer. Shortest spring and fall that I have ever experienced - about 3 weeks.

  • Not sure about schools, but most of the major international schools are out by the airport, which is a long way away. There is almost no crime in Beijing - it is an insanely safe city for it's size. Never worried about crime here. The environment will look a bit rough from the outside of buildings, by US standards, but is usually much nicer inside. Environment is also bad from time to time with air pollution, always worst in winter.

  • The air pollution isn't always bad, usually about 30% of each month. When it is clear, it's typical to have beautiful blue skies. Either way, buy an air purifier and plenty of face masks.

  • Winters can get really cold and snowy (like the last one), and summers tend to be extremely hot and humid. Hurricanes and storms seem to be very regular now, most notably Sandy 2.5 years ago, which did a lot of damage and actually accounted for lower Manhattan and its post-facilities losing power for a week

  • New York City itself is the ultimate metropolitan place, with one of the most famous skylines in the world and a pulsating city life. Culture is second to none, there are amazing restaurants and bars for a night out, museums, galleries and music venues for anything art related. Not far from the city we even have some beaches, which extend further along Long Island. Upstate New York has a lot of great hiking opportunities and is a lot more rural.

  • You have to be a city person to enjoy it here. New York is loud, smelly and very crowded. Safety is not so much a concern in the Post-Guliani and Bloomberg years (I felt a lot less safe in London), but is always a good idea to act smart.

  • Sydney and the suburbs can get VERY hot in summer - 95F/35C + days are not uncommon in summer, and temperatures in recent years have hit 106F/41C as early as mid November. Thankfully it's more of a dry heat so is not entirely intolerable. If you're in the city, winters are moderate, mostly nothing that a sweater and some jeans can't take care of.

  • Vancouver, like Seattle, get a good amount of rain but depending on your background it is very tolerable. The winters are mild if you grew up on the east coast of Canada or US. Snow in the mountains but very rarely in Vancouver. And if it does it doesn't last long. That is were the rain can be very helpful

  • I pack for big swings in the weather. Layering is key. I carry a travel umbrella there. I always bring waterproof shoes or boots to location shoots. On location, I keep a backpack with a waterproof weather gear with me. It rains more than it snows. Considering the reputation of the area, I have been extremely lucky on shoots. Summer and early fall seem to have less precipitation.

  • The Wellington climate is temperate but often windy. There are several big storms a year.
    — Matt Aitken on Friday, June 26 2015 at 10:17am
  • They don't call it Windy Welly for nothing! Umbrellas are a rare sight here because there is often a strong wind when it rains. Make sure you have a good water & wind resistant jacket during the winter. During the summer, people follow the motto "slip, slap, slop" to protect themselves from the intense sun and thinner ozone layer. It is very easy to get sunburned here, so wear a good hat, cover up or use sunblock during these months.

  • Wellington is a small city of around 200,000 people. It's often described as a mini-San Francisco because of the hills and location next to the ocean. The downtown area is like most others with a CBD (central business district), harbour, and a couple of streets where the cafes, restaurants and bars are mostly located. Weta Digital and Weta Workshop are in Miramar which is in the "Eastern Suburbs". The flats of Miramar is actually a drained lagoon, which is surrounded by high hills. The more expensive real estate is just east in the Seatoun suburb, where the views of the water are quite nice. The airport really dominates the area. And "Wellywood" is spread all over Miramar where multiple buildings and sound stages are located.

  • Generally, companies don’t have health benefits for freelancers or short-term employees. If you come to work at one of the bigger places in town on a longer contract, you might be able to sign on with them and maybe even sign on to Cobra (http://www.dfs.ny.gov/consumer/faqs/faqs_cobra.htm) after it ends. You can use the NY health exchange that was created after the ACA: https://nystateofhealth.ny.gov/ I had good experiences with Oscar (https://www.hioscar.com/)
    — Alex Lemke on Tuesday, August 11 2015 at 07:13pm
  • Health care in the US is generally costly, in NYC even moreso... If you're coming from another country, be sure to note co-insurance/copay values, deductable amounts (in Australia it would be known as an 'excess' - they somehow manage to make it sound like a positive thing here), whether your particular plan requires referrals, and then obviously, the cost benefit of each of these things. The new US health exchange has put all health plans under certain 'metal' levels - bronze, silver, gold, platinum - to more easily compare plans between providors. Warning: my personal premiums in NYC jumped 16% this year, and %14 last year, expect to pay at least ~$300 a month for a bronze plan and ~$600 for a gold. I use Freelancers Union aka Empire Blue Cross, but have heard good things about Oscar too.

  • Three weeks after moving to Vancouver my son became a type 1 diabetic. He was rushed to the emergency room. there was never any question about insurance (thought we didn't know what to expect coming for the states and used to a completely different system and attitude). At the end of the day, his stay in the emergency room, his stay at the hospital as well as the training we all went through cost us nothing. In addition, he left the hospital with an endocrinologist (she is amazing), nurse practitioner and a team of health care personnel to help all of us learn about and manage his chronic illness. It was amazing.

  • NYC is a really tough market for renters - the demands for apartments are high, and so are the rents (only SF seems to be more expensive - the median rent for a one bedroom in 2015 here is 3100$ http://ny.curbed.com/tags/rental-market-reports) As a rule of thumb, landlords expect you to make a salary of 40 times your monthly rent - which is a lot. A lot of people have roommates or live further out in the boroughs to save money. And, last but not least, talk to friends and colleagues if they know of anything. There are mailing lists out there that might help you If you are relocating from afar, your new company should put you up for at least two weeks to help you settle in. Make sure to demand that in contract negotiations. If you are thinking of moving to one of the outer boroughs, check the public transportation - you want to live close to a subway line (ideally more than one) to help you with your daily commute into the city.

  • www.qxstate.com Ask for Sean Yeo. A good real estate agent (like this one) will drive you around personally to see a lot of properties. Just make sure you specify budget and location in advance so they can plan. You will be looking at either a condo apartment with shared pool, etc, or a HDB flat (govt housing flat). Govt flats are much cheaper (1000 USD), but not as nice. A good 2-3 bedroom condo flat should cost you about 4000-5000 SGD per month. Rent will be your biggest expense.Buying is expensive and only Singapore citizens can buy houses on a block of land. Foreigners can buy apartments, but the stamp duty is very high, and most start at around 2 million SGD.

  • Note that nearly every rental agreement is for a 2 year contract (the average length of time most ex-pats stay in Singapore!). You can not leave within the first year without having to pay the yearly balance. You can leave in the second year without having to pay early leaving fees, but it will still cost several thousand dollars. Try to find somewhere you will be happy for at least 2 years, and make sure the length of your employment contract covers this!

  • TradeMe is pretty much the main resource for renting. It's pretty much all you need for buying as well, altho individual realtors will have listings on their sites. realestate.co.nz will also have rentals that are put up by realtors, but not individuals. Unfortunately, if you want to browse TradeMe properly, you have to have an account and a NZ address. If you're hired already and intend on moving here for the first time, I'd use your company's physical address on the registration so that you can use TradeMe fully.
    — Jerry Kung on Wednesday, November 25 2015 at 02:31pm
  • realestate.co.nz also has listings for rentals. Keep in mind that in New Zealand rates are ALWAYS listed for weekly, not monthly, amounts.

  • I freelance across both large and small studios, as Alex has said, larger studios are on W2's, the smaller places get me to fill out a W9. Many freelancers have an LLC or S-Corp set up for invoicing as there are greater tax benefits. It is likely that you'll need to chat to a tax or finance professional to work out what will best suit your circumstances.

  • If no taxes are withheld for you: make sure to have a savings account that is dedicated for you upcoming tax payments. It is tempting to consider these part of your income, but that can end badly. I would suggest putting about a third of the gross income into tax savings. Also, any payments into an IRA (up to 5500$ for employees, up to about 50K for independant contractors) can help you save on taxes and for retirement. Vanguard seems to be a good choice as they have low fees (https://investor.vanguard.com/home/)

  • Taxes appear a little higher but depending on how long you are in Canada you receive a tremendous benefit with the nationalized heath care system. In addition, VES Vancouver can direct you to a program VES member for extended care (thi is not a VES program but was initiated by the efforts of VES Vancouver), if your employer doesn't offer it. Extended care which is not covered by the national health care system is for eye and dental.

  • Yes. Most Facilities are in Downtown Manhattan, so most people commute via the subway. NYC subway net is good, but can be unreliable and crowded. It is probably best to accept the things you cannot change. Best times are outside of rush hour (8-10 in the morning / 5-7 at night) but of course this is when you have to get to work.

  • Subway - a monthly pass is 112$ and is unlimited. It takes you from the Bronx to Coney Island (just like in the Warriors) Taxi - you can hail the yellow cabs on the street. Green Cabs can only be hailed in the outer boroughs, not Manhattan Uber - has become a favorite of late (despite their questionable Surge Pricing policy and work practices) Bikes - are becoming more and more popular. The City introduced a bike sharing program called Citibike (https://www.citibikenyc.com/) Cars - nope, you don’t want to use those in the city.

  • Cycling (Citibike) in the morning and Subway in the evening.

  • I use the subway for everything, or sometimes walk. In the New Year I intend to ride a lot more - the city is incredibly flat and has great bike lanes (although many in disrepair due to snow and ice) for commuting.

If someone is moving to your area, are there any unusual weather conditions that they should prepare for? Does there tend to be a lot of snow, rain, are there hurricanes, etc?

Is traffic a major factor in your commute? If yes, when are the best times to commute?

  • Traffic can get bad at peak hours, but is never that bad. You can check on Google Maps for the traffic conditions.

  • Subway and buses are most common. Some cycle, but the high speed of the traffic makes it dangerous, and there are hardly any bike facilities, like dedicated lanes, and so on. Cars are prohibitively expensive to own. There is an initial high price (much higher than in the US) and a "right to own a car permit", which can cost as much as the car itself.

  • Subway (called the MRT). Clean, modern, frequent and very cheap; $2.30 USD for a return trip into the city centre each day. Buy an EZ Link card and top it up to use on buses and trains. Taxis are also quite cheap (average fare is about $15 USD), but can be hard to catch in peak hours and Fri/Sat evenings especially. Look for the "Taxi Booking" app on iTunes store (ComfortDelGro) which is great for booking in advance or hailing a cab when you need one.

  • No, especially if your other experience is LA, NY or London

  • I come from LA, so traffic is relatively better. There is a rush hour, but not as dense or as long. There is a lot of road construction during spring through fall.

    — Dennis Hoffman on Thursday, June 25 2015 at 11:22am
  • Walking, bicycles, bus, train, sea bus (ferry to North Vancouver). Cars are used but the public transportation is preferred, generally. Parking is expensive.

  • Car, but depending on where you live and work public transportation is very good
    — Dennis Hoffman on Thursday, June 25 2015 at 11:21am
  • When I am working in town, a car is an inconvenience. Trains and cabs are great. My preferred travel from Vancouver Airport (YVR) to downtown Vancouver is by train. The last station is a five minute walk from my workplace. When I am on a shoot, I need a car. It's easy to navigate with either the Google Maps app or the Maps app on an iPhone.

  • It is extremely easy to get around Vancouver
    — Dennis Hoffman on Thursday, June 25 2015 at 11:24am
  • The public parking structures are much cheaper than the private ones. Impark is the most expensive, and they often have the most convenient locations, so it is easy to overpay.
