Preparing For The Job Search – How To Better Market Yourself In An Increasingly Competitive Industry Plus Demo Reel & Resume Reviews

It’s tough out there. You know this. For the first time in years many of you are faced with finding a new job. In the spirit of helping our members through these difficult transitions, the VES Education Committee has put together an event that offers a hands-on approach to preparing your marketing package. Besides imparting practical information about what’s needed and what form it should take, the day will include individual, one-on-one demo reel and resume reviews by industry professionals involved in hiring.

Scott Wyler will present the keynote address that asks the provocative question, “What do you want to do, and how do you get there today?” Mr. Wyler is a founding principal of Leadership Evolution Dynamics, a leadership training and coaching company.  He has helped to develop employees at firms across multiple industries, including DreamWorks Animation, Fox Entertainment Group, NBCUniversal, Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Genentech, Shopzilla, and Greendot Corp. He began his career in the arts, earning his B.A. in Theatre from the University of California at San Diego. He performed for years with the Los Angeles improv group The Alley Oops, and has appeared on stages throughout the U.S.  He’s also in a few movies that are not worth renting.

He earned his M.Ed. in Training & Development from Capella University.  He was employee #1 of a startup in the Web 1.0 days, and then became VP of Employee Engagement at a Fortune 100 company, where his responsibilities included the design and execution of recognition programs for 25,000+ employees. He also volunteers as a staff director at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, a non-profit camp for children with cancer and their families.  He lives in Encino, California with his wife Lori and son Bennett.

Pam Hogarth will present important tips & tricks on preparing your personal marketing package. Ms. Hogarth has spent almost 30 years in the world of visual effects, 25 of which doing marketing, education and career guidance. Before recently starting her consulting company, she worked at LOOK Effects as Director of Marketing, where she significantly increased the company’s footprint in the visual effects and production industries. She continues to work with LOOK guiding their publicity and marketing.

She spent the 12 years before LOOK helping to build Gnomon School of Visual Effects into the premiere educational institution for careers in high-end CG. During this time she advised, taught and placed hundreds of aspiring digital artists. While doing that, she found the time and energy to devote to the growth of the Visual Effects Society where she has served multiple terms on the Board of Directors, was twice elected as the first female Vice Chair, is Chair of the Benefits Committee and has been one of the abiding Chairs of the Education Committee. Pam has also spoken at computer graphics and academic conferences here and abroad. Pam holds a BS from Springfield College in Fine Art and Psychology and an MEd in Vocational Counseling from Kent State University. She loves helping people make their dreams a reality.

These presentations will be followed by demo reel  and resume reviews. Reviewers will include Erik Press, Brad Reinke, Camille Eden, Art Durinski, Susan Thurmond O’Neal, Pam Hogarth and Benoit Doidic.

This is a free event that is open to VES members and visual effects professionals who’ve worked in the industry for at least three (3) years. Seating is limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. An RSVP does not guarantee seating.
