HACKSAW RIDGE is based on the true story of small town boy turned army medic Desmond Doss (played by Andrew Garfield) who, in the battle of Okinawa during World War II, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. A “conscientious objector,” Doss fought on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. The film, which also stars Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Vince Vaughn, was directed by Mel Gibson from an adapted screenplay by Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight. HACKSAW RIDGE was produced by David Permut, p.g.a., Bill Mechanic, p.g.a., Brian Oliver, William D. Johnson, Bruce Davey, Paul Currie and Terry Benedict; with cinematography by Simon Duggan, ACS; production design by Barry Robison and set decorator Rebecca Cohen; film editing by John Gilbert, ACE; music by Rupert Gregson-Williams; costume design by Lizzy Gardiner; make up and hair styling by Shane Thomas; sound mixing by Kevin O’Connell, Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace; sound editing by Robert Mackenzie and Andy Wright; and visual effects by Chris Godfrey.
