Although this is the time of year when awards shows proliferate, tonight you’ll witness something that none of the other shows have – billions of dollars’ worth of the most amazing visual effects you can possibly imagine. In fact, I think you can say that the field of visual effects has truly come into its own and is now a major component in all facets of the entertainment industry. This is because virtually all delivered entertainment, whether it is movies, TV, animation, video games, commercials, or special venues use visual effects in one way or another. Whether you want to see King Kong swatting away bi-planes or to enjoy traveling back in time with the wizards of Guinness Beer, you’ll need visual effects to tell you story.
As we admire the best work in visual effects for this past year, and honor John Lasseter with the George Melies Award for Pioneering & Artistic Excellence and Jim Morris with the VES Board of Directors Award, just remember, if you want to know who the best visual artists in the world are, just look around you – because they are right here in the room next to you!
